Writing on Smart Boards: Annotation, Palm Rejection & Arabic/French Handwriting

The single most-tested feature in any smart board demo is the pen — because if writing feels wrong, teachers and executives quietly go back to paper. Writing quality is measurable, and it matters twice over in our region, where boards must handle Arabic script, French accents and English on the same canvas. Here is what to test, and why.

The three numbers that decide writing feel

  • Latency — the gap between pen tip and ink. Under 30ms feels natural; premium panels reach single digits. Test with fast cursive, not slow printing.
  • Touch points and pen differentiation — modern boards track 20-40 points and tell pen from finger from palm, so two students can write while a third erases with a fist.
  • Palm rejection — rest your hand on the glass and write, as you would on paper. Boards that fail this force an unnatural floating wrist, and Arabic — written with the hand resting and dragged right-to-left — exposes weak palm rejection faster than English ever will.

Writing Arabic and French on one canvas

For ministries, schools and multinationals working trilingually, check three behaviours in the demo: right-to-left ink flow with the palm resting (Arabic), handwriting recognition that converts script to text in Arabic and French — not just English — and keyboard/interface language switching per user profile. Our guide to Arabic & French interface support covers the OS side; this is the ink side. Education deployments should also confirm dual-pen support so two pupils write simultaneously in different colours.

Pen-first collaboration only works when palm rejection lets people write the way they do on paper.

Pen technology, briefly

Infrared boards use lightweight passive pens — cheap to replace, fine for classrooms. Capacitive and InGlass panels support finer active pens with pressure levels, better for design and executive annotation. Whichever you choose, order spare pens with the initial consignment; sourcing a single stylus to Lagos later costs more than ten ordered upfront. Frequently asked questions

Does Arabic handwriting recognition work on smart boards?

On current Android panels from major brands, yes — but quality varies; always test conversion with connected Arabic script, not isolated letters.

Why does my current board ink lag?

Usually source lag: writing over a wireless-cast laptop adds 100ms+. Write in the board's native whiteboard app to judge the panel itself.

Can two people write at once?

Yes — look for at least 20 touch points and dual-pen differentiation for classrooms.
